Inlays & Onlays – Vancouver, CA.
When more than half of a tooth’s biting surface is damaged, we often use an inlay or onlay to restore the tooth’s anatomy.

What Are Dental Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are custom restorations used to repair damaged or decayed teeth. Made from porcelain, gold, or composite resin, they are bonded to the tooth for a strong, long-lasting fit. Inlays sit within the grooves of the tooth, while onlays cover a larger area, including one or more cusps.
While gold was once commonly used, porcelain is now a popular choice for its strength and ability to blend naturally with your tooth color—giving you a durable and seamless result.
How Are Inlays and Onlays Applied?
Inlays and onlays are typically completed in two visits.
First Appointment
The damaged or decayed portion of the tooth (or old filling) is removed, and the tooth is prepared. An impression or digital scan is taken and sent to a lab to create your custom restoration. A temporary seal is placed to protect the tooth until your next visit.
Second Appointment
The temporary is removed, and the inlay or onlay is checked for a precise fit. Once everything looks and feels right, it is securely bonded to the tooth and polished for a smooth, natural finish.
Considerations for Inlays and Onlays

Traditional fillings can weaken a tooth over time, sometimes reducing its strength. Inlays and onlays, however, are bonded directly to the tooth using strong materials, helping restore and even reinforce its structure.
These restorations are durable and long-lasting, often providing reliable results for many years. When the damage isn’t severe enough for a full crown, inlays and onlays offer an excellent middle-ground solution—preserving more of your natural tooth while improving strength and function.
If you’re exploring treatment options, a consultation can help determine if inlays or onlays are the right choice for your smile.
